Unable to update (tried everything I could think off, but no joy)

You are using UBOS on a Rasberry Pi. Please state which model you are using, e.g. Zero, Zero W, model 3 or such.

Unable to update (tried everything I could think off, but no joy)

Post by jan-jan » Fri Jul 13, 2018 12:12 pm

Everything is working great running NextCloud on my RaspberryPi. However, I cannot upgrade anymore.
If I run

Code: Select all

sudo pacman -S ubos-admin --noconfirm --verbose
(since, it is the first step in

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update
) I get the errors

Code: Select all

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
and

Code: Select all

Re: Unable to update

Post by j12t » Fri Jul 13, 2018 10:24 pm

We've seen this happen under some circumstances. Not sure how common this is. To solve, simply delete the two offending files mentioned in the error message (snippet):

Code: Select all

ubos-admin: /etc/avahi/services/http.service exists in filesystem
ubos-admin: /etc/avahi/services/https.service exists in filesystem
Become root, and then:

Code: Select all

rm /etc/avahi/services/http.service /etc/avahi/services/https.service
They try again to upgrade.

P.S. There are a lot of things that happen during "ubos-admin update" prior and after invoking pacman, so I strongly recommend that unless you understand them all, you stick with "ubos-admin update" to upgrade.

Thanks, I'll delete the files.

The problem now is that

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/avahi/services/http.service /etc/avahi/services/https.service
asks for a password (which we don't have in ubos).

For reference, the following runs without password

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update

I mounted the drive via another machine. Deleted the offending 7 files, and now when I run

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update
I get the error:

Code: Select all

Next I tried to fixing the problem by copying the latter 5 perl files from Github.

Now when I tried

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update
I get the error

Code: Select all

ERROR: Cannot create a temporary backup; the backup directory is not empty.
Did a previous ubos-admin operation fail? If so, please log a bug at
    https://github.com/uboslinux/ubos-admin/issues/new
To restore your data, run:
    ubos-admin update-stage2
As per the suggestion I tried

Code: Select all

ubos-admin update-stage2
Now the system is hanging :cry::cry:

I copied those 5 files again. This time from the master branch of the UBOS repo.

Upon

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update
I still get the errors

Hmm ... you somehow ended up with a partial upgrade and some of the files you deleted are actually needed, which is why other things are now failing ... I don't quite know now what state your system is in ... it's certainly not a good one ... Let's see what we can do.

1. To be safe, copy all files from /var/lib/ubos/backups and /ubos/backups off your device somewhere else (you may have only one of those)

2. Force re-install ubos-admin:

Code: Select all

sudo pacman -S --force
3. Attempt to recover, with debug flags on

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update-stage2 -v -v
If this does anything other than succeeding, please post 1) the full log, 2) any output of

Code: Select all

systemctl --failed
. Also, please review the system log for anything suspicious with

Code: Select all

sudo journalctl -b
.

Also, please do not mix files from different UBOS versions, and certainly not from git branch master, things will almost certainly blow up.

Thank you for helping.

The force reinstall of ubos appears to not work.

Code: Select all

$ sudo pacman -S --force
error: no targets specified (use -h for help)

PS. Here is the other two responses you asked for:

Code: Select all

$ systemctl --failed
0 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
Of

Code: Select all

$ sudo journalctl -b
I've only included the latest

Code: Select all

Sorry, my mistake, I missed adding the package name to the command!

Code: Select all

$ sudo pacman -S --force ubos-admin

Thank you, that worked.
I also thought that

Code: Select all

sudo ubos-admin update-stage2 -v -v
worked, since the output was error free

Code: Select all

INFO : ubos-admin update-stage2 -v -v

TRACE: UpdateBackup::delete

TRACE: Exec: rm -rf '/etc/httpd/ubos' '/var/lib/ubos' '/srv/http/wellknown'

TRACE: invokeCallbacks( /etc/ubos/state-callbacks stateChanged Operational )
After that I managed to upgrade. However, now (post reboot) I get this result

Code: Select all

$ sudo ubos-admin update
ERROR: snapper (pre) failed of config root IO Error (.snapshots is not a btrfs subvolume).

Is that ERROR something worth worrying about?

Something else appears to be wrong though, as I can no longer login to NextCloud.

The webpage simply no longer opens.
